The overall interview experience was very comfortable. The manager was very friendly during the interview and spent more time explaining the company’s philosophy, perhaps because they really want candidates to understand the company before joining. The compensation and benefits are about the same as those for similar positions in central and southern Taiwan.

The office environment is fairly clean. You have your own desk and chair, and there is air conditioning plus an electric fan; otherwise, it would not be cool enough.

It is a very large company with a very old brand. The chairman really likes telling old stories and giving lectures, believing himself to be highly knowledgeable. Meetings start early at 8:30 a.m. every Monday and Tuesday and usually continue until nearly noon, around 12:00. The discussions are invariably about his brand philosophy, his loofah water, and how excellent his charitable activities are. Employees are also required to take oral exams on “What is the Key to Three-Dot Water?”—Huni water, spring water, and loofah water—and the lectures never seem to end. There are also tests on satisfactory communication, including how to explain words containing the three-dot water radical. He also frequently flies into a rage. I did not work here for very long, but every day I had to endure the chairman’s training on how to describe the origins of the three-dot water radical. The benefits are very poor—in fact, it would be more accurate to say there are no benefits at all. There is one boxed lunch available at noon; everything else has to be reported, including going to the restroom. It is a very strange company culture. There are no middle managers; everything is decided by the chairman. Whenever he thinks of something he wants done, he makes new demands, and the procedures are constantly changing. Anyone considering working here really needs to be able to put up with the chairman’s strange temper and a company that has no systems and is stuck in old traditions.

The interviewer started by thanking me for taking the time to attend the interview, then asked why I wanted to join. After that, they introduced the company environment and the job responsibilities, and asked about my reasons for leaving my previous job and why I wanted to apply for this position. Overall, I felt pretty good about it.

After joining the company, interactions with colleagues have been pleasant, and supervisors check in to see whether there are any adaptation issues. There is a great deal of room to apply your abilities, and ideas brought up for discussion in meetings are always taken into consideration.
