I had an interview at this company at 2:00 this afternoon for a graphic design position! It turned out to be a truly mentally distressing experience!!
After sitting down, the female manager conducting the interview asked me to briefly introduce myself, then asked about my previous work experience.
She then continuously criticized my past work history, asking, “Why did the company let you do that for so long?”.....
After criticizing the way my previous company was run, she started looking at my portfolio (I could tell she didn’t really like it) and began criticizing my work as well. She said that I had been making these kinds of things for more than ten years, yet she couldn’t see what my personal style was or what my strengths were?? I found it really strange. I was the one who submitted the application, and your company was the one that recognized my work and invited me to interview. Yet during the meeting, she repeatedly put down my work and criticized how my previous company was operated!
I find it quite ridiculous. I was only there to interview for a job—I shouldn’t have to put up with criticism of the direction my previous company took. I wasn’t the owner.
Also, as an aside: she asked me to take out my portfolio and show it to her. It was on a 13- or 14-inch notebook, placed about three large office desks away from where she was sitting (the interview seat), and she looked at my work from there... It was extremely disrespectful! I was about to ask whether we should switch seats so she could sit closer to the front, but she said first, “Just sit back in your original seat, then... use this wireless mouse to click through the computer.” What an absurd interview experience... It ended hastily.
It’s true that I’m looking for a job, but I also deserve to be treated with respect!!
