Pros

The boss hardly ever asks you to work overtime.

Cons

The employee turnover rate is very high. Although I only worked there for half a month, every day was spent memorizing pipe and tubing dimensions. I also communicated with the boss about this: if you have never actually worked with them, memorizing them is useless no matter how much you study. However, the boss would not listen. The boss also kept criticizing me for being too slow at drawing CAD plans. I explained many times that I had previously only drawn flat plans, so I needed some time to get used to creating 2D 3D drawings. However, after I finished one that same day, he insisted on using the line-marking method from his hand-drawn version. The boss would also give you hand-drawn plans, but his own hand-drawn sections were not correctly marked, and he would still tell me to “use my brain.” (P.S. The boss had told me, “Just follow my hand-drawn plans.”) I can understand that a site supervisor needs to understand materials, and I also understand the need to understand construction quality, but why did I also have to handle purchasing and quotations?

At the time, the boss asked me, “When you worked on public construction projects before, didn’t you prepare the quotations yourself?” I replied directly that the quotations were prepared by the office staff, while I was responsible for overseeing construction quality on-site. (Maybe the company was simply too small—one person had to do the work of many.) Later, when I was forced to leave, the boss’s wife also told me, “You haven’t finished your probationary period yet, so I don’t have to give you severance pay or anything like that.” I replied that the Labor Standards Act had changed and that, starting from the first day of work, I was already a regular employee. The boss’s wife then kept calling their legal consultant for a long time before finally giving me the involuntary separation certificate and severance pay. The boss and his wife often said that they always had projects, but what I heard was that the longest-serving technician there worked one week and then took one week off. The company did not actually have that many projects; half of the work was subcontracted to other companies as temporary labor. The company’s materials also said that it provided bonuses on the three major holidays, but in reality, there were none. Both bosses have very rigid mindsets and are unwilling to change.
