When I resigned, I did not give three days’ notice in advance. Professor Su Xcheng insisted that I personally pay this month’s labor and health insurance contributions; otherwise, he would not pay my salary. Because he had already paid them, I silently swallowed the NT$2,478 cost of the labor and health insurance.

To put it bluntly, the research assistant’s salary is not even paid out of his own pocket—it comes from project funding applied for from the government. Labor and health insurance contributions are supposed to be a risk that the employer bears. Why should that burden be passed on to the research assistant? I still have the conversation another assistant had with me at the time. The professor said that he would explode if he also had to pay the labor and health insurance contributions.
