Generally speaking, you have to wait until the students finish class before you can leave work. Overtime pay? That doesn’t exist. Meetings for major events can run until eleven or twelve at night, with no overtime pay as usual—but getting chewed out until you’re practically blasted into orbit is definitely real. Basically, it’s also a culture of ingratiation: people who speak smoothly and nauseatingly flatteringly rise rapidly through the ranks. You may also get sabotaged by colleagues, and the way things are actually done is probably at the level of thirty years ago. The salary is also quite stingy in practical terms. On top of that, with fewer people taking the civil service exams in recent years, staff turnover in the organization is unbelievably high. Don’t take on this challenge unless you have to; you’d definitely have better prospects working as a manual laborer.
