The work is essentially “what needs to be done today is finished today.” Unlike office work, there are no official documents or projects that keep getting sent back because they cannot be completed. It is easy to take leave because the work is shared by everyone, so there is usually no pressure.
The working hours are long. Normally, clock-in is at 6:30 or 7:00 a.m.; in the worst case, I once had to clock in at 6:00 a.m. and did not get off work until 7 p.m. Overtime is often required because of the workload. There was one time when I worked overtime for nine consecutive holidays. Because the work is outdoors, I have to endure wind, rain, and sun every day. At testing sites without shade, I may be exposed to the scorching sun for an entire day. NT$3,000 per month for boxed lunches is included in the salary, and no meals or drinks are provided separately. I have to arrange them myself. Taking sick leave also results in a deduction for the boxed-lunch allowance, calculated by day. If I do not cooperate with overtime, the bonuses paid for the three major traditional holidays and the year-end bonus will be deducted. The holiday bonuses are not guaranteed; unlike what the boss says, they are not always paid at half a month’s salary—it depends on his mood. There have been years when the company earned too little and did not pay them at all. Testing staff are at the very bottom of the company hierarchy, even lower than the administrative assistants. Whenever something happens, all the blame falls on the testing staff. The boss has a very arrogant attitude and takes advantage of long-serving employees. The longer you work here, the more he assumes you will not leave. You have no share in salary adjustments; if you do not cooperate with overtime, he deducts your bonuses and still says your performance is very poor. He even considers it acceptable to convert weekday overtime into travel time, paid at NT$120 per hour. Even the Labor Bureau cannot do anything about him. He is extremely arrogant.
