This is a predatory company operating within the Veterans Affairs Council vocational training system. It is a Hsiao family business, with the boss, the boss’s younger brother, son, daughter, and relatives controlling personnel and finances, so don’t expect any opportunities for development.

The boss of this company teaches classes at a Veterans Affairs Council vocational training center.

Basically, the owner of a company with nearly 20 employees and annual revenue exceeding NT$10 million looks down on the hourly teaching fees at the Veterans Affairs Council vocational training center.

What he wants is first access to soldiers who have just left the military and do not yet understand the darker side of society.

That way, he can carry out his exploitation plan. Soldiers are easy to deceive, after all—scam groups like this kind of target the most.

As for why it is predatory:

1. Work environment: There is a morning meeting at 8 a.m. where the boss assigns tasks and work. Sometimes, if he is in a bad mood, he also verbally abuses people. Clocking in is done through a cloud-based system, which means that when 5 p.m. arrives, you have to clock out while still at the work site or on your way back from it. That way, they can avoid paying overtime.

2. Overtime pay: Basically, pretend this does not exist. For new employees, when you return from a work site, the boss uses various forms of emotional blackmail, sarcastic remarks and stares from senior workers, and peer pressure to force you to stay at the company and do miscellaneous tasks in the name of “practice.” For senior workers, it is actually even worse, because after returning to the company they have to fill out all kinds of forms, submit official documents, and get yelled at by the boss—none of this is counted as overtime.

3. No meals provided: Normally, when a company sends a work crew out, the foreman provides meals and water. This company provides absolutely nothing. They even charge you for the boxed meals sold at the construction-site canteen, and there is no need to mention water—if you fill too much water from the office, the boss will even lecture you.

4. Workplace atmosphere: Being at the work site is much more pleasant than being at the company, because returning to the company means entering a low-pressure atmosphere. This is also why the senior workers here all have such terrible attitudes; naturally, the pressure imposed by the boss can only be vented on new employees.

5. Most importantly, pay: New employees earn less than NT$30,000, with a three-month probationary period. Raises depend on the boss’s mood and are NT$500 each time. Leadership positions are just as ridiculous, with only an additional NT$500. There are technicians who have been with the company for three or four years and earn less than NT$40,000 a month; they have to work overtime on holidays to exceed NT$40,000. The holiday overtime pay is especially laughable—calculated out, it is even less than what you would earn doing day labor, at most a little over NT$1,000.

6. Tools: The company does not provide basic tools and requires you to buy your own. Although there are shared power tools, the boss keeps a close eye on how you use them, and you have to pay compensation if they break. Therefore, people there generally prepare their own tools. There is one advantage: when you resign, you can simply take everything with you.

7. Why hasn’t the company been sued? This goes back to what was mentioned earlier: soldiers are easy to deceive and naive, so no labor disputes have broken out yet. After brainwashing people through his classes, he manages to trick a fool into joining his company every few months. I am writing this long post simply to save one person at a time. Low-voltage electrical technicians are in very short supply on the market, so don’t let this company deceive you.
