Subsidized fuel and parking expenses

1. No red envelopes for Chinese New Year.

I can understand not receiving a year-end bonus since I had only been here a few days when I started in February, but they were so stingy that they were unwilling to give even a red envelope.

2. The sign-on red envelope is deducted when you resign.

When I checked my final salary statement, I discovered an unexplained deduction. Only after asking did I find out that they had taken back the red envelope given at the start of employment.

3. Excessive penny-pinching over working hours.

On regular weekdays, don’t get too excited when the boss tells you not to come in, because you won’t be paid for that day. Before the Lunar New Year and on the first day back at work, if they let you leave early, they will only pay you for the hours worked instead of paying your full daily wage.

4. Overtime pay is settled once a year.

They said this was to offset reduced hours during the off-season. Is there anyone who can accept receiving overtime pay only once a year?

5. The start-of-work offerings consist only of food that no one wants to eat.

Namely, fa gao (prosperity cakes). They gave you all the fa gao—about six or seven of them. They did not share any of the better snacks or food with you.

6. Benefits are exaggerated.

They initially said lunch was provided, but it actually depends on the boss’s mood. The benefits listed on the recruitment website—domestic and overseas travel, birthday cash gifts, and so on—do not exist at all, as confirmed by a senior employee who had worked there for eight years.

7. The time clock is never accurate.

During the one or two weeks I worked there, the time clock was never accurate. It was always more than an hour early.

(I clocked in at 8:30, but the time printed on the card was 7:40.)
