Pros

1. The salary is pretty good.

2. The company is close to an MRT station.

3. The boss pays the National Health Insurance, Labor Insurance, and Labor Pension contributions.

Cons

1. The boss is computer-illiterate, so employees have to handle both computer-related tasks and trivial matters.

2. The boss has warped values and thinks that having graduated from university makes him especially impressive and different from other tradespeople, yet his writing is a complete mess. He has said such “wise words” as: “Being a boss means having a different brain,” “Only a boss understands a boss,” and “Employees never put themselves in his shoes”… among others.

3. The work itself is not difficult; the difficult part is that working with the boss is frustrating.

4. The boss and the tradespeople smoke, chew betel nuts, and drink alcohol on the front balcony. Their daily conversations revolve around profanity, dirty jokes, chauvinism, and the foreman’s bizarre values.

5. The boss always makes everything sound wonderful in front of customers, but don’t be fooled. He keeps taking on projects— even large ones—without being able to finish them. Then, for the sake of his pride, to avoid being pressured by customers, or to collect deposits, he keeps opening new job sites. The tradespeople then run around between old and new sites, but the work still never gets finished. You will often see customers asking in the group chat when work will begin.

6. You have to lie and clean up the boss’s messes. Every day, you have to deal with customers, constantly using the weather as an excuse and delaying projects by lying that a tradesperson has tested positive for COVID or that there is a labor shortage. When things can no longer be delayed, he will even subcontract the work to another company.

7. He puts no thought into his work and gives unclear instructions. He does not arrange important matters in advance. Once, he failed to notice something and received a customer complaint, then blamed the employee for not specifically reminding him.

8. His work efficiency is poor and he procrastinates. He can take a year to fix something, and even small matters can be dragged out for six months. He only deals with things when something goes wrong or there is an urgent need, and he often tells employees to handle them on his behalf.

10. As described above, his way of doing things ends up causing himself a great deal of stress, which he takes out on employees, giving you the experience of being berated for no reason. Afterwards, he absolutely refuses to admit that he has a bad temper or low emotional intelligence, and even thinks his temper is better than before. Like, what the hell does that have to do with me?

11. Basically, all the trivial tasks are handed to employees, but employees have no actual decision-making authority and there is absolutely no corresponding system or process.

12. The boss makes excuses all day. Many things clearly need to be handled by him first before employees can take over, but as mentioned above, he procrastinates. So you have to keep reminding him, yet he will not deal with things immediately and will keep making excuses to try to persuade you, even using personal matters as excuses.

13. Unless the boss has a very full schedule of projects or appointments, you will often see him sleeping in the office, sometimes until after noon. He could clearly use the time to handle other matters, but when he is busy, he says he has no time to deal with things, which leaves a poor impression.

14. He gets diarrhea every time he finishes chewing betel nuts. The restroom has no ventilation and reeks every time he uses it, but he never puts the lid down before flushing; he only keeps spraying air freshener. His hygiene habits are poor: he does not flush properly after using the toilet, leaving fecal residue, yet I have never seen him scrub the toilet. Employees have to clean it themselves because they cannot stand it anymore.

15. Company dinners are always scheduled after work or on holidays, supposedly as an employee benefit 🙄. He never makes reservations early, always says he is busy, and then lets the tradespeople bring their wives and girlfriends. Those without partners have to awkwardly endure the entire event. I genuinely feel it is such a waste of time…
