The boss is very sensitive, takes out his emotions on others, and often suddenly becomes upset and starts making sarcastic remarks, saying that you haven’t done enough—as if you never do anything and just slack off.
One day, I asked for a promotion and raise. After all, I had been with the company for over a year and felt I had a clear conscience about my performance. The boss pretended not to see the email. A few days later, I brought it up again. He happened to be in a bad mood, so he suddenly asked me to come up with six post ideas. I put a lot of thought into it and came up with around eight. After I sent them to him, he started saying that this one didn’t count and that one didn’t count, because I had apparently already thought about posting something like that before (me????????). Then he said: “If you were the boss and asked someone to come up with six post ideas, and they only gave you one, would you accept that? You don’t need to answer me. I’ll tell you—I can’t accept it. That’s the difference between an assistant and a specialist.” He publicly berated me in front of the entire company. That was basically his way of saying I wasn’t getting a raise. I think the only time I’ve seen him speak Chinese well is when he’s insulting someone or angry.
At the beginning, he asked about my salary expectations, but the actual offer was extremely low—probably only $100 above minimum wage. Then he said, “there will be a steep learning curve and training involved.” Before I joined the company, he said he would teach me and guide me step by step into the industry. After I joined, he didn’t teach me anything at all; I had to figure everything out myself.
My position is Marketing Specialist, but I feel that at this company I’m basically his secretary, calendar, and the person he takes sarcastic jabs at when he’s in a bad mood. Whenever a client asks why something hasn’t been submitted or chases him for an update, the boss comes to me and says, “you need to remind me.” It’s not that I didn’t remind him—I had already reminded him two or three times. I felt that continuing to remind him would get annoying, so I stopped. His usual response is: “oh you know that I’m a very forgetful person; if I don’t reply, it means I didn’t see the message or forgot.” (Who knows whether you forgot or simply didn’t see it ==.) Also, he never handles courier packages himself; he always makes me deal with them. When I had to write the address and name on a package for him for the first time, he even said, “Your handwriting is so ugly—rewrite it.” I had a hundred question marks in my mind. (You can’t even write Chinese, sir, and you still dare criticize me?)
Then one time, he suddenly exploded over something—I don’t even know what. At first, our working hours were very flexible, but he suddenly said that the matter was “out of his control” and that we had to leave exactly on the hour. Once, I left three minutes early, and the next day he was still angry and told me, “STILL TOO EARLY .” Also, a colleague at the company once touched me inappropriately. I told the boss about it, but he said: “All men are like that. I was also misunderstood at work when I was young, so I often tell my daughter to protect herself properly.” (I won’t comment further on this part; everyone who reads it can understand how absurd it is.) As for that colleague, I also told him that I felt uncomfortable. His response was: “You can’t blame me, because you started this part first.” (If you want to hear more, I’ll go into detail in another post later.)
In summary, if you want to personally experience being unfairly mocked, having to watch the boss’s mood at work, or you don’t have shopping urges and won’t spend money, then come on over!!
