Pros

A few days after the interview, HR called to ask whether I could accept working overtime. My inner monologue: So there’s a lot of overtime???

About two weeks later, they called to say I got the job. The salary was 900,000 per year, excluding bonuses. Overtime could be claimed, and the overtime usually lasted until around 8. It wasn’t every day (really???). People online all say there’s a guaranteed 14 months, but the manager said there wasn’t. If I calculate it as 12 months, I’m OK with it.

Cons

HR was really unhelpful—when I asked questions, they didn’t know the answers, yet they loved bringing up the Labor Standards Act and saying everything followed it, blah blah. How would I know whether your company actually complies with the Labor Standards Act? Am I supposed to be a fortune-teller? After looking around online, it seems the salary is relatively high, but I still hesitated for a while....... Although the Chinese parent company is listed on the Taiwan stock exchange, based on my understanding of that kind of distorted mainland Chinese corporate culture, overtime is definitely going to be reported to the death. There’s a monthly limit of 46 hours, so I still feel the base salary is a little too low. But looking online, for a non-engineering-background newbie like me, this seems to be pretty acceptable.
