Pros

1. Not much overtime is required.

2. Often very idle with nothing to do.

3. If you accidentally cause losses by making a mistake, you don’t have to compensate for them.

Cons

1. The position advertised in the interview was clearly “Graphic Design Assistant,” but after joining, it became “Graphic Design Planner.” Because the title includes “Planner,” I have to take care of many miscellaneous tasks.

2. Work is inexplicably added. If the boss suddenly wants to do something, even if it has nothing to do with my position, he assigns it to me if he thinks I’m suitable for it. Although it feels unreasonable, it is basically impossible to refuse; everything has to be based on what the boss says.

3. The company is a five-story walk-up building, and it has to be cleaned every Monday. Everyone is assigned an area to clean. Someone also has to be scheduled to take out the trash.

4. During the Lunar New Year, we have to thoroughly clean the entire company, including the company warehouse— the boss’s family home—in Daliao District. It is extremely tiring and hot.

5. It’s a small traditional-industry company, so we often have to share various administrative errands and odd jobs.

6. Even though it is an office job, we only get eight days off per month, so in months with more than eight days of Saturdays and Sundays, Saturdays have to be used to make up the difference.

7. Being one minute late results in a pay deduction, but to count as overtime pay, you have to stay at least half an hour extra.

8. The company has been established for more than 20 years, yet coworkers still have not established SOPs for handling tasks. Veteran coworkers are also unwilling to proactively teach; they only tell you what to do when that particular situation arises. Sometimes they even scold you irrationally: “I clearly told you before, so how do you still not know?”—without realizing that no one had ever told you.

9. There is one large-scale event each year. Although it requires more than a month of preparation, the boss and supervisors keep dragging their feet and do not finalize the date until two weeks before the event. Those two weeks involve relentless overtime and being so busy that there is no time for lunch. The day before the event, we have to set up the venue until midnight, then get up at 6 a.m. the next day.

10. The boss has many relatives and “royal connections.” Family members of the boss who used to work at the company occasionally return, order employees around, and act as though they are superior. We are expected to serve them.

11. The boss is vain, likes expanding his network everywhere, and is also a member of the Lions Club. When an organization he joined in his personal capacity needs to hold an event, he complains that the key visual and graphic design look ugly, then takes it upon himself to handle some of the design work and dumps it on company employees to do—namely, unlucky me.

12. The boss has severe obsessive-compulsive tendencies and likes to display his need for control in strange ways. He often repeatedly revises meaningless minor details, and perfectly good work becomes extremely ugly after being modified at his request.

13. Sometimes the boss is away on a business trip. After I finish my work, I spend the entire afternoon on standby, but he does not call to assign me anything else. He always waits until one minute before I get off work to call and tell me what needs to be done, causing the task to drag past quitting time.

14. Occasionally, the boss has nothing to do and stays on the first floor of the company. When he sees me preparing to leave through the main entrance after work, he deliberately calls me over to talk, wasting 3–5 minutes. (Does that really make him feel good?)

15. The boss has very poor personal hygiene and burps without the slightest inhibition around anyone.

16. The boss has terrible habits—or does he think he is an emperor? He always leaves his food-related trash on the first-floor table, waiting for someone to clean it up.

17. The boss is extremely suspicious and thinks people outside might peek at his phone screen, so he uses a privacy screen protector. As a result, when he discusses something with me on his phone and asks me to look at the screen, I can’t see anything. (Protecting himself from his own employees—happy now?)

18. The boss is technologically illiterate—so much so that he does not even know that “you have to press the power button to use a computer.” He also likes using a computer to hold Zoom meetings and lecture female counter staff all over Taiwan, so I always have to sit beside him and operate the meeting screen while he only has to focus on talking. (He is unwilling even to learn how to switch PPT slides and always makes me sit beside him to operate it.)

19. Continuing from the previous point, the boss is technologically illiterate and has the personality of a giant baby. He is concerned about his image and unwilling to learn, so whenever he encounters a technology-related problem, he comes over and tells me to fix it, tossing his phone directly to me. He never thinks about learning how to do it himself so he won’t have to bother others; he just expects someone else to make it work.

20. Goods are often returned to the company, so employees have to help move them. The boss and his wife only hire women and refuse to hire men. Because we occasionally have to move goods, I basically can’t dress up for work. In the end, I can wear little more than a top and long pants, and manicures are also impractical because they get chipped. (Once, I dressed slightly more nicely and a coworker even mocked me: “Why are you dressed so well?”)

21. Lunch break is only one hour, and the boss often deliberately discusses work with employees during that time. Although the lunch break can be postponed, by the time I can rest, everyone else has already started working. The office is noisy and still brightly lit, so it is impossible to rest properly.

22. One older coworker is extremely disliked by everyone. She has resigned and returned to the company several times, and she has lashed out at every new employee. She has terrible emotional control. Her work ability is also a disaster, and talking to her is enough to make you furious. Every coworker hates her, yet she is completely unaware of it.

23. When discussing work matters, the boss never gets to the point. He keeps going off-topic and rambling about unrelated things simply because he wants to talk about them but has not had the opportunity. It is inefficient and wastes time.

24. At Monday meetings, the boss and supervisors are always late, and the meeting inevitably runs into lunch break.

25. The office has poor lighting and ventilation, ancient fluorescent lights, and air conditioning that alternates between too cold and too hot. The furnishings and equipment are old, the computers are terrible, and when it rains, the company even leaks and floods.
