Pros

1. People who like the civil-service system can come here: one promotion and one raise every year; ability doesn’t matter, connections do.

2. People who are incompetent and thick-skinned can come here. If your skin is thick enough, you won’t be laid off. It doesn’t matter if you lack ability—there is plenty of love and tolerance here.

3. If you think you are handsome or beautiful and can win over management, you can come here. No matter how poorly you perform—even if you can’t give a presentation—you can still get in. Based on my observations, senior management likes pretty figureheads.

4. People who like taking time off can come here. There is lots of leave here, and you can never use it all. You can take all kinds of leave; if anything feels uncomfortable, just take time off—it’s fine.

5. People who like married men or married women can come here. Your position can be used to conceal improper relationships.

Cons

Do not apply to the headquarters. Do not apply to the headquarters. Do not apply to the headquarters! It’s important, so I’ll say it three times! Capable people, please go elsewhere—do not go to McDonald’s headquarters!

1. Senior management only knows how to talk, not how to do things. Beneath them is a group of long-tenured dinosaurs with outdated, unimaginative ideas. Capable newcomers who join are simply waiting to be drained and clean up after others, while the old-timers continue collecting comfortable paychecks.

2. Resource allocation by senior management is extremely uneven. Some departments are as busy as dogs, while others have such easy jobs that they don’t know what to do each day; they have to pretend to be busy to look as though they are working! If you apply to a department for a PM role that requires no technical skills, congratulations—you may land an easy position. On average, each person only needs to be responsible for one system. The daily work consists of calling vendors to make them do things and telling newcomers to do things, while the department manager enjoys an easy salary and performance bonus.

3. A department manager has an improper relationship with a newly hired colleague who is a figurehead. The figurehead colleague can’t do anything, so the manager has other people do the work. Others work overtime to clean up the mess, while the figurehead takes leave and rests at home.

4. The headquarters managers have a strong need for control. They like to discuss everything behind closed doors, then, once a decision has been made, require the entire company to complete it within a week, with absolutely no sense of scheduling. Regardless of what projects you are handling, how long or difficult they are, or what plans you have, everything must be delivered within a week. Of course, the figureheads are exempt; other people share the workload for them.

5. Digital capabilities are very poor. Two-thirds of the people there know extremely little about new knowledge—some have never even heard of it. They hate change and have no interest whatsoever in learning new things. Newcomers have it terribly: you go in to contribute your labor, then continue to be exploited. There are many redundant employees at headquarters—truly, an enormous number. You have no idea how some of them can draw a salary here. People who make no contribution to the company occasionally answer the phone and then do nothing else.

6. If you are applying to a department that requires technical skills, please, by all means, do not come. Run, get out! The technical departments are exhausting, the workload is heavy, there are many reforms, senior management will not approve new headcount, and there are already senior redundant employees internally. After finally getting someone to join, it turns out to be a figurehead with zero technical ability and zero presentation ability. I’ve escaped; take this as a warning—do not come and waste your time.

7. If your supervisor is a man, pay attention to whether he is married. This person has an extremely strong need for control, likes to manipulate everything single-handedly, likes to force everyone to work overtime with him, and likes improper relationships. Respectable women should stay away; capable, ambitious young people should stay away.

In conclusion: Get into the right department and you’ll be happy for life; a technical department will ruin your life.
