Pros

I don’t think there were any. Does receiving a thank-you letter after not being hired count as a plus, rather than being ghosted?

Cons

1. I don’t know why the interview tested IT-related topics (SQL syntax and Linux commands) using pen and paper. I thought it was a midterm or final exam. Of course, some people might say that if you can’t write the answers on a written test, you have no real ability. But I easily wrote down five Linux commands. These are things you operate on a computer—are you really expecting someone to do this job with just a pen and a sheet of paper?

2. They made a big production of it: the personnel-section manager, the IT department manager, and a senior IT supervisor all showed up. Naturally, I still wasn’t hired in the end.

3. The network equipment was placed directly on the floor. In addition, although three managers interviewed me, there weren’t actually many technical details. Toward the end, when the department manager and the senior supervisor showed up, one of them casually said, “You’re more computer-science-oriented; we need people who are more management-information-systems-oriented.” I had to keep a straight face and remain composed. Do IT managers really think MIS is stronger than computer science? Personally, I think both fields have their strengths and there’s no need to pit them against each other. But saying this only makes me question whether, aside from being management with the authority to veto hiring decisions, you actually understand IT. It’s not as if I think I’m exceptionally strong, either.
