The company is very law-abiding. For employees who joined in the early days, even general administrative receptionists earned over $40,000. Salaries were adjusted every year in the early days. The work was simple and highly repetitive. The environment was good, and it was a Fortune 500 company. If you had a mortgage, you could get relatively favorable interest-rate benefits. Now, the salaries of young employees newly hired for reception positions are around NT$26,000. It is fairly easy to get by and pass the time.
I am just a regular employee. I have heard that managers fight among themselves; they can argue in meetings until their faces turn red and their necks bulge, and they can make attack-like remarks in company group chats. There are many long-serving employees who should have retired but have not. If young people have no aspirations for the future, they can continue coasting there—getting promoted when the time comes. The longer I stay, the more I feel that my competitiveness will decline, but I also feel that I probably would not be able to find a job elsewhere.
