Pros

The colleagues are pretty nice and easy to get along with.

Paychecks are issued on time.

Cons

The various events make your life miserable. The annual red wine sale is considered a major event: bottles of red wine have to be scanned one by one, and even three people working at a single register can barely cope. A single register can process nearly 600,000 in sales, with no double-pay or allowances. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, customers buying barbecue ingredients would poke bamboo skewers directly through the plastic bags. Under the pressure of handling large volumes and checking customers out quickly, cashiers are easily injured.

When staffing is low, they make you clock out early. During long weekends or events, supervisors require employees not to take leave.

During the interview, they also did not mention that staff might need to be reassigned to provide support. After my leave, I only received the schedule at 10 p.m. the night before I was due to return to work, informing me that I had to support another branch. The efficiency of issuing work schedules is very poor.

If bread is missing a label or there is a problem with the prices on the shelves, it is always the cashier's responsibility. Supervisors indulge unreasonable customers in all kinds of ways, allowing them to request price adjustments at the checkout and causing trouble for cashiers (and I still had to run to the service desk). When I got to the service desk, a colleague told me there was an issue involving tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive prices, yet the supervisor still wanted me to pay for the difference. The company enables unreasonable customers to become increasingly entitled, while frontline staff are the ones who suffer.

The store manager at my branch made even more outrageous demands. Cashiers were expected to take products from customers' carts, check them out, repackage them, and explain the promotional offers.

I am not working in a department store selling luxury goods, and there are no sales targets. A cashier has to deal with more than 500 customers a day—how much time would it take if every customer were handled this way? Constantly bending over will eventually cause physical problems. Putting the customer first does not mean using it this way. Meanwhile, as the store manager herself, she knew nothing about the promotions during different campaign periods, and she would also come shopping herself. She was an unreasonable customer herself, making things difficult for cashiers, and even discriminating against some employees based on their appearance and deliberately causing trouble for them.

This company has long been a habitual violator of the Labor Standards Act. The benefits are nothing special, and promotions are even more difficult to obtain. Salaries do not increase with seniority either. A colleague who has worked there for eight years earns about the same as we do. As a part-time employee, my schedule is actually more flexible.

If you really do join Carrefour, I recommend not taking a frontline position. Having to deal with all kinds of unreasonable situations, unreasonable customers, and events every day, combined with the meager pay, is very damaging to both your mental and physical well-being.
