You can leave work on time because there is no overtime pay anyway
1. An extremely conservative family business, where the boss’s management philosophy is to do everything personally. But one person simply cannot manage dozens of brands, so the efficiency is predictably terrible.
2. A Dragon Boat Festival bonus of NT$500—so little it’s laughable.
3. Typhoon days off are unpaid, which effectively means your pay is docked, and the NT$1,000 perfect-attendance bonus is tied to it.
4. Mid-level managers are extremely good at making grand promises. During interviews, they lure people in by claiming there are performance bonuses, but later you discover they are group bonuses; if even one group fails to meet its target, it is impossible to receive the bonus.
5. A weekly meeting can ramble from one unrelated topic to another and is extremely inefficient. Every week, you have to waste an entire afternoon listening to the boss talk about his past achievements, as well as whatever superficial thing he has learned from an app—which he considers a great discovery on the scale of Columbus.
6. There are no management guidelines or strategies whatsoever. The “learn by doing it the hard way” approach is the truth of Taiwanese family businesses.
7. It is heavily governed by personal preference. If the boss takes a dislike to you, you are immediately blacklisted. The reasons are extremely subjective—for example, he might see that you are very close to a colleague he dislikes.
8. The boss likes taking naps but also wants to control every detail. The result is that anything requiring his decision can only be left pending.
9. The company has extreme distrust of its employees, because no matter how well you perform, you can never be as trusted as family members by blood.
10. Employees are divided into the ambitious type, who love currying favor with the boss, and the retirement-minded type, who have a civil-servant mentality. The ambitious type will use any means necessary to take credit.
