Pros

Some senior colleagues say that after completing three years, if you receive the full amount, you may get as much as 18–20 months’ worth.

Cons

1. On my first day of reporting to work, the bespectacled woman with a sour face from the HR department and the assistant from the engineering department had very poor attitudes.

2. Some colleagues who have only been there a few years are quite nice, but most of the senior veterans are very indifferent and full of themselves.

3. Senior employees in the department will pressure you to work one or two hours late regularly and then say you will not be paid overtime. During the newcomer period, they will also pressure you to come in on Saturdays without overtime pay, seriously violating the Labor Standards Act. The senior colleague assigned to train you will say that they went through the same thing before, and that it will stop once you pass the probationary period.

4. After being assigned to shifts, there is no dinner for the day shift and no breakfast for the night shift; you can only wait until your shift ends to eat.

5. If you are trained by a less-senior colleague, you may be allowed to go out to use the restroom or drink water during breaks. However, when certain senior colleagues train you, they will tell you to wait inside the plant until they return from their break. You may then be unable to use the restroom or drink water for an entire morning or afternoon. Even if you do go out to use the restroom or drink water, they will say that you must hurry back inside the plant once you are done. Only senior veterans are allowed to rest longer at the tables outside.

6. After chatting with colleagues, I found out that the attrition rate among new hires used to be very high. They should all know exactly where the problems lie, but many of the senior employees there do not want to change. Maybe they are gambling on finding a durable, obedient, useful slave.

7. During my time in Miaoli, I have found that people here seem quite indifferent, whether inside the company or among local residents. I still feel that people in central and southern Taiwan are warmer and easier to get along with. The Hakka people here seem more pragmatic and self-centered, and on top of that, the food is really awful—only chain restaurants are edible.
