Note: Items 2 and 3 are described as opportunities because they mainly depend on whether the store manager allows them.
1. Pay increases are very small; typically, you only have a chance of getting a raise when you move up to a higher position.
2. Promotion opportunities are limited. Basically, the highest position you can reach is store manager; moving on to the head office is nearly impossible unless you have a personal relationship with someone inside the company.
3. The increase in pay after becoming a store manager is not proportional to the added responsibilities, so the store-manager position is generally regarded by frontline employees as a particularly undesirable job.
4. The actual workday is 10 hours, with no designated break time. Breaks are only possible when there are no customers; if there are customers all day, it effectively means having no break all day.
5. Employee discipline is based on the person rather than the action. Basically, it is a case of “connections mean immunity”: as long as you have a certain relationship with someone inside the company, even a serious mistake will at most result in being transferred from a northern store to a southern store, without any major punishment. Without such connections, the opposite is true.
