The company determines the seniority of positions based on age rather than years of service. A newly hired accounting assistant can speak more loudly than a supervisor and order other colleagues around simply because she is 40 years old—older than the others. Yet whenever she is asked to handle the responsibilities of her role, she always evades responsibility or blames others instead. The Finance Department takes a tea break promptly at 3 p.m. every afternoon, and anyone who does not fit in becomes the subject of gossip. The entire company revolves around Finance, while the Sales Department is micromanaged to the point that it cannot get anything done, causing it to miss many partnership opportunities. When workplace verbal provocation was reported to the supervisor, the supervisor continued to protect colleagues who curry favor, even responding, “Working eight hours a day is exhausting; having an easy life is the correct attitude toward work.” No matter how well you perform, it is useless: the workload will only keep increasing. The parachuted-in supervisors also keep changing, and they all just want to coast through their days. Whenever anything is wrong with the work, they shift the blame onto former employees to absolve themselves.
