I think this company is a huge red flag. I clearly stated my salary expectations on my résumé, but right at the beginning of the interview they said they might not be able to offer that salary and that this was the absolute maximum (then they wrote it down). Besides expecting you to know everything, they also judged that my skill level might not be sufficient without even looking at my portfolio to assess it. How can they say my level is inadequate when they haven’t even looked at my portfolio?

They then said that the company also has many designers in mainland China, and that their salaries aren’t high either (so you know how low your offer is), but that their skill levels are very good, blah blah blah. Honestly, based on the website they showed me, I really don’t think their skill level is so high that it deserves such exaggerated praise.

They also said that looking at a portfolio is useless anyway, because every project has to go through many rounds of revisions, so there’s no point in looking at it.

No matter how well someone can capture a style when they first join, there will always be an adjustment period. I was stunned when I heard that. They then said that many of the graphic designers who joined later ended up following the style of the previous graphic designer (at that point, I felt they must have replaced quite a few people). They said that if the previous graphic designer hadn’t gone abroad for further studies, they wouldn’t have needed to hire anyone (in short, they seem stuck in the past).

I actually found it very disrespectful. They said my skill level was insufficient without even looking at my work, and judged that I lacked stability just by looking at how long I had stayed at my previous companies. (They said they didn’t count the years since graduation because I graduated more than five years ago; the three companies listed on their form add up to roughly four years of experience.)

This is probably the longest review I’ve ever written. I genuinely feel that the interviewer showed no respect for the people coming in for interviews. (Although her tone was calm and flat throughout, it was basically just her looking down on you, haha.) Even if the final decision was made by the boss, no matter how little you understand, you could at least make a show of flipping through the applicant’s work to get some idea of it. That would still be better than immediately saying their skill level was insufficient.

In short, I strongly do not recommend this company.
