Pros

1. Coworkers are easy to get along with

2. A year-end bonus that has remained the same for ages and amounts to only one month’s salary (full-time employees)

3. Annual leave days follow the Labor Standards Act

4. The grand prize at the spring banquet is a NT$10,000 gift voucher; the other prizes are sponsored by vendors or departments.

Cons

1. Salaries are divided into an old and a new system. Supervisors earn NT$1,000–3,000 less than new employees, while also having to be on call at all times. There is a daily barrage of exhausting LINE messages, and early-morning and evening shifts are the norm. You also have to deal with meaningless audits and boring store visits by the general manager, who is about to step down. Finally, during the annual performance appraisal interview, you are told that you cannot receive a raise because you have made no significant contribution.

2. Every year, the slogan is “Let’s get through these difficult times together,” while one person is made to do the work of three to five. Whenever sales are poor or inventory losses occur, personnel expenses are cut. Full-time employees are expected to work like dogs—dogs have it easier. They also love inventing all kinds of pointless service methods. They expect the horse to run without feeding it any grass.

3. When a customer complaint names someone specifically, they do not investigate what actually happened; they simply convict the person outright. If there is a bonus competition that month, the unit that received the complaint will immediately become the target of criticism at that month’s company meeting.

4. Managers are very good at shirking responsibility and finding scapegoats.

5. There is only a spring banquet and no year-end banquet. The Mid-Autumn barbecue uses ingredients left over from department sales.
