Pros
Newcomers can hone their skills here; everyone is welcome to gain experience.
If you work overtime past a certain hour (when the MRT stations close) and the company is worried you won't be able to get home, you can claim the taxi fare.
The company has a strong reputation; Ogilvy products are built to withstand the demands of the job.
Cons
1. The working hours are extremely long.
Working until 10 p.m. is the norm. Occasionally, it goes until 11 p.m. or midnight. Once the MRT stations close, just take a taxi.
What is overtime pay? Can you eat it?
2. You often work from home on weekends too.
It depends on the supervisor. Based on the situations of three or four teams of colleagues I know, the supervisors all assign work on weekends.
Sometimes the tasks are small and trivial; sometimes they are substantial and take one or two days to complete.
What is personal time? Can you eat it?
3. The salary is extremely low.
The interview process is extremely demanding—you may have to go through three or four rounds—and even after being hired, they do not give you an offer. You only sign the employment contract on your first day of work.
That is when you finally get to see the salary details.
In my own case, I have a master's degree from overseas, but as a fresh graduate with no work experience, I was offered less than 30K (excluding the 2,400 meal allowance).
Based on all of the above, if you still want to come here to build up your résumé, go ahead. Having your own ideas is certainly a good thing.
I just hope you have a realistic understanding of the situation and don't get lured in because of insufficient information.
