Pros

Getting along with colleagues is relaxed and pleasant.

Cons

You need to have a very high EQ to work here, and an extremely high level of patience when dealing with supervisors. The graphic designers don’t seem to stay for very long.

When you are doing layout work, the supervisor will stand beside you pointing things out and making demands, questioning your methods of creating graphics, and so on (basically an outsider judging an insider). They will require product images to include Japanese, Korean, English, and so on. “Korean style” and “Japanese style” apparently mean that Korean style must have Korean text at the top and Japanese style must have Japanese text at the top—this has nothing to do with the actual style at all. However, almost all of the products sold are imported in containers from China, and they also frequently take images from Chinese websites and ask the graphic designers to modify them.

They emphasize how professional their products are, but sometimes when photos of the actual products arrive, they are defective or dirty. You have to retouch and remove these flaws while also making the images look highly professional, which sometimes really goes against your conscience.

They often ask you to create graphics before the actual products have arrived, or fail to tell you when the products arrive, and then scold you, saying things like, “If we had the actual product, why didn’t you photograph it?” (How were you supposed to know that the actual product had arrived?)

The supervisor’s most common phrase is: “Design and marketing are different.” Whenever you try to explain something, they often use this phrase on you. Basically, they don’t listen to the graphic designer’s opinions or ideas. As soon as you express an idea, they say, “Design and marketing are different,” and they always say things like, “What consumers want to see is such-and-such; you can’t do it this way.” I often have no idea who the “consumers” they refer to actually are. It should probably just be the supervisor herself.

They will also point to the best-selling stores on websites and say that things should be done that way, while also saying that you cannot make it exactly the same. Or, after everything has already been completed, if they see copy, selling points, or features mentioned by another store, they will say, “Did you know our product also has this feature or selling point?”

Sometimes, right when you are preparing to submit the graphics, they will say to redo and rearrange everything. Sometimes they will have you spend an entire day working on something, then tell you the next day to discard all of it.

Even when the supervisor has edited the graphics, if they sell poorly, it is because the graphic designer did a bad job; if they sell well, it is because the supervisor taught them well.

When the supervisor instructs you to modify the graphics (the supervisor will stand right beside you and directly tell you to make this bigger, that smaller, and use a certain color, teaching you step by step ^.^), after giving the instructions they will still ask, “Don’t you think this is better than the layout you just made? This is what consumers want to see~” They want you to agree with their words and ideas and acknowledge that the version they changed is better.

They require you to show the graphics to the website’s gateway PM. When the supervisor’s and the PM’s ideas conflict, the person who suffers is the graphic designer~

If you want to create things with a sense of design or learn anything design-related, you may want to think twice.

You need to have extremely high EQ and patience. If you know how to use AI for layouts but don’t have many of your own design ideas, and you want to sit in an air-conditioned office, you could consider giving it a try~

& Working at this company has taught me that it’s probably better not to buy products from certain websites.
