After starting work, I discovered that the boss liked to keep saying, “We’re all one family.” Being one family naturally meant that everyone had to do everything together; even tasks outside the scope of one’s work had to be done. Responsibilities and authority were not clearly defined—because we’re all one family, after all! At the same time, employees were strictly forbidden from communicating privately. The boss believed that whenever colleagues gathered together, they must be badmouthing the company, unaware that the boss was actually the one who loved speaking ill of employees the most. Yet when facing employees, the boss still acted very amiably. No matter how hard you worked, it was all futile, because the boss regarded you merely as a replaceable tool—dispensable and insignificant. Even after leaving the company, you would continue to be badmouthed, and this could even affect references during interviews for subsequent jobs, making it extremely difficult to find work.
