Pros

Colleagues are easy to get along with.

Work is relatively relaxed when the boss isn’t around.

You can bring your children to work.

Generally, you can also leave work on time (but the boss will look displeased and make sarcastic remarks).

Cons

1. The boss is extremely stingy and has low emotional intelligence. There is no overtime pay; asking for money is treated as if you were asking for his life. Even when treating employees to a group meal, he drags it out for half a day and is very reluctant to pay. Don’t expect much from year-end bonuses or holiday gifts either.

2. When things aren’t done well, he only criticizes employees for being incompetent and never reflects on his own problems. He will even hold meetings to berate all the employees.

3. He likes to make grand promises to new employees, and keeps bringing up the employee trip to Taipei 101—the only trip he has ever taken—to brag about it. Basically, there will be no salary adjustment during the first three-month honeymoon period.

4. The boss likes to put matters to a vote, but has repeatedly been caught manipulating the results. If the outcome doesn’t suit him, he questions employees one by one about why they voted that way.

5. The company environment is poor. The only public transportation is a bus that comes once an hour. As soon as the office door is opened, a strong moldy smell comes out. Cockroaches and rats go without saying. There is an incinerator nearby, and only one Hi-Life convenience store. Employees have to take turns each week buying lunch and taking out the trash.

6. The outdoor packing area has no air conditioning, so it is cold in winter and hot in summer. The computers in the office are old; even after repeatedly reporting that they need repairs, the boss only ignores the issue.
