Pros

Regarding the parts related to international business:

1. Formal attire, including a dress shirt, is required on weekdays; a tie is required in winter.

2. There is no overtime pay. If you work past 7 p.m., you can claim NT$100 as a meal allowance. If you leave work before the boss, the boss will notice; the boss’s office has a view of everyone’s every move.

3. There are plenty of opportunities to prepare detailed reports: weekly, monthly, quarterly, semiannual, and annual reports. All must include extensive PowerPoint files. The photocopier works very hard.

4. You must meet one-on-one with the sales boss once a week. The entire sales department must also attend a weekly meeting with the sales boss; every month, the entire sales department must meet with the general manager once; and the entire company has a monthly meeting. All of the above require PowerPoint presentations, so they are good opportunities to practice PowerPoint.

5. Overseas clients “almost” never require business trips for visits; communication is conducted entirely through Skype and email. You do not need to worry about becoming a frequent flyer.

6. There is no middle-level sales manager, so communication channels are direct.

7. The interview may require two or three rounds because the boss is very busy and will give you many questions to take home, think about, and answer.

8. Bonuses are calculated quarterly. You become eligible for performance bonuses only after completing three months. For a sales salary, I think you can try asking for anything from NT$40,000 to NT$60,000. Salespeople are hard to find, so just insist on the salary you want.

9. After being hired, the general manager will require you to work on the production line for one to three months first. You must write a reflection report every day—you really will be doing hands-on work on the production line.

Cons

1. The way sales and sales assistants work together is extremely complicated, and some “senior” sales assistants require a high EQ to work with.

2. Business-related emails must be printed out, key points highlighted, and discussed with the boss. If I remember correctly, the company uses more than 10,000 sheets of paper a month (in a company of 100 people). The photocopier really has the toughest job.

3. Being late results in a salary deduction, and there are no flexible working hours.

4. On Fridays, you have to wear the company T-shirt to work. Most people wear it over their outerwear like a baseball jersey. Does that really look good?
