Pros

At first, the owner showed great respect for professional expertise in the design-related areas. However, when business performance was poor, he became very emotional and would unreasonably demand prices below market rates, making it difficult to work and offending quite a few vendors.

He was also difficult to communicate with when he was in a bad mood. Although overtime was not mandatory, if you left work on time, the owner would unhappily say, “You all leave work so punctually!”

Because of pressure from personal relationships (relatives’ or friends’ children), people without professional qualifications were often placed in the department. Salaries were low, and being promoted to department manager came with only a NT$1,500 raise. If you asked for a raise, he would say that your salary was already one of the highest in the company (meaning: don’t even think about it—it’s impossible!).

When assigned to work trips, you had to peel fruit and buy breakfast for the junior boss. Employee trips required you to use your own annual leave. The sister-in-law (HR) even said, “I asked friends at ‘large companies,’ and they all do it this way too!” (The benefits were not comparable to those at large companies, but the demands were.)

When I first joined, I actually felt quite free, and I was even given a proactive salary increase once. But later, perhaps because business performance declined and the originally excellent department manager resigned, the workplace atmosphere became increasingly unpleasant, and the owner became harder and harder to communicate with. Once he became prejudiced against you, it was very difficult to change his mind. He often favored the fashion design department, causing problems for other departments. The marketing budget was extremely low, making things very difficult to execute. To be fair, around 2013 I would have given the company a positive review; now I would give it a negative review. (Maybe it’s a case of “we parted ways because we came to understand each other” XD)
