The culture varies greatly between departments. Some team leaders will block you from claiming overtime, while others allow it; some let you leave on time, while others make you stay very late.
My team lets us claim overtime. During busy periods, working hours can extend until eleven or twelve at night; when things are less busy, until seven or eight. On weekdays, it’s also fine to leave at six or seven if you have something to take care of.
The downside is that the departmental bonus is small; even with a master’s degree from one of the Big Four universities, it takes about three years to break the million mark.
I haven’t been treated unfairly either—at least, I received ASUS’s Model Employee award one year while keeping this kind of schedule.
So choosing the right department really is very important...
