Pros

Formerly worked as a store employee for over a year

1. The one drink you can receive each day is only available after purchasing an insulated bottle sold by the company.

2. Officially, they only say that labor and health insurance is provided, but the insurance is based on the minimum basic wage rather than the actual salary. (This does not comply with the definition of wages under Article 2 of the Labor Standards Act, and overtime pay should also be included in the insured salary.)

3. National holidays are not days off. Instead, you receive a payment for the unused holiday (overtime pay), but the calculation is problematic: they calculate it as monthly salary / 31 days (less than your normal daily wage). (This does not comply with Article 39 of the Labor Standards Act or the definition of average wage under Article 2; holiday overtime pay should be monthly salary / 25 × 2.)

4. NT$3,000 is deducted from your salary as a uniform fee and is not refunded. A compensation amount is withheld from your salary for the month in which you resign. (Neither of these complies with Article 26 of the Labor Standards Act.)

5. Permanent employees must give one month’s notice before resigning. (This does not comply with Article 16 of the Labor Standards Act.)

6. If a cake is damaged, you will be required to buy it at the employee price (10% off the original price). (Even if it is only slightly damaged and cannot be sold, you still have to buy it.)

7. You cannot arrange all of your days off yourself. About half are assigned by the supervisor, and on Saturdays and Sundays you may choose only one day yourself. (When I worked there, I received one fewer day off than required by the Labor Standards Act. Pay extra attention during the interview, and also pay attention to the overtime pay mentioned in point 3.)

8. Any wages above the basic wage are paid under the name of a bonus, with various rules allowing them to deduct this bonus—for example, your pay will be deducted if you clock in more than three days without clocking in 10 minutes early. (If there is a demerit system, not only are all bonuses for that month deducted, but another NT$3,000 or NT$1,500 is deducted the following month. This already violates Article 26 of the Labor Standards Act. The total deductions can bring your pay down to the basic wage; they exploit a loophole by making the deduction the following month.)

9. There is a promotion system, but the exams effectively have no defined scope and the results are not transparent. Information related to the exam questions is only sent to the stores after the exam, and the results are only announced as pass or fail. You need to gain the favor of a supervisor (a senior manager who oversees multiple company-operated stores) to have a chance. If there is a management opening, they may ask you to perform the role first without paying you the corresponding salary (you still have to pass the exam to receive it).

10. Recently there has been widespread discussion about the milk used by Louisa Coffee. Previously, Dan-Dan Coffee used Kuang Chuan’s business-use milk (50% fresh milk), supposedly because it froths better. We jokingly called it flavored milk, but if customers asked, management instructed us to say it was fresh milk. Don’t be fooled again!! (It was changed a while ago; I don’t know whether the supplier or the product was changed, but it is still not 100% fresh milk.)
