Managers are forced to take on-call duty during their days off, and when the on-call schedule is arranged, no consideration is given to whether the manager is off that day. Female managers are simply told to coordinate with other colleagues themselves. If they cannot arrange coverage and fail to answer the phone or provide support on the on-call day, the company says they will be disciplined and have their pay deducted. When supporting major events such as residents’ meetings, spring banquets, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and Christmas, employees are often required to provide support for anywhere from two to six hours, yet the company refuses to pay overtime, claiming it is for learning purposes. At every residents’ meeting or evening event, photos commonly show anywhere from four to twenty employees wearing uniforms inside, but none of them receive overtime pay. The government’s labor inspections are completely blind to this.
