The salespeople handling game marketing are completely brainless. I once went to a pitch and got torn apart by the client because I didn’t understand games at all. Even more laughable, they don’t play games themselves and know nothing about them, yet the first thing they do is ask the PM, “What is the game about?” During work hours, they can go out for coffee with the boss and supervisors, arrive late and leave early, and say that discussing work is exhausting. When I told the manager coordinating the entire department, I was even told that they were working hard to bring in business. There are tons of successful marketing case studies online, and the sales manager will say, “You know, that whatever—you guys should put together an article similar to it or something.” Wow, just leave it all to you to say. When marketing goes well, they say it’s because sales has an excellent relationship with the client; when something goes wrong, they say the PM failed to take care of it. Sales gets the credit, while the PM takes the blame. Sales gets commissions, while the PM’s bonuses have all kinds of high thresholds and are simply withheld. During the interview, they said there was a monthly project bonus of 2,000–8,000, but give me a break—there wasn’t even 800, let alone 8,000.
