Pros

1. You can go do other things during work hours, such as getting a haircut

2. People in high-ranking positions can exploit loopholes for personal gain

3. Even if laws are broken, the big shots won’t pursue it and will handle it discreetly

(However, the portion the company was cheated out of is borne by all employees: benefits are cut, and everyone is asked to weather the difficulties together.)

4. Suitable for fresh graduates to pad their résumés; not many professional skills are required—just be obedient

5. If you’re not in an important position, it’s very suitable for coasting toward retirement

6. The supervisors and employees are generally very nice, except for a certain southern-region supervisor

7. The pay is generous for a traditional industry company in Tainan. In 2018, there were bonuses for the three major holidays, employee trips, company meals, and year-end bonuses; starting in 2019, everything was cut (the employee trips, three-holiday gift money, and employee meals listed in the online job posting were all canceled)

Cons

1. The salary for the website interface optimization designer is extremely low, while the requirements are very high; it would need to offer at least NT$50,000 to attract experienced candidates

2. Marketing specialist is a terrible position; the work is all writing articles, while brand planning is led by the company’s marketing-genius boss’s wife

3. In-home childcare and tutoring: it sounds nice to call it tutoring, but bluntly put, it’s domestic work

4. Kiln-firing operators, food-factory operators, and similar positions: the factory work is simple, and they receive the same benefits as office staff

5. Part-time store customer service and sales staff: any store except those in the south is fine; the southern-region supervisor is [censored profanity]

Pros

1. Complies with the Labor Standards Act.

2. There are tons of downsides.

Cons

1. The company's base salary is NT$25,000. There is a commission, but it is practically the same as having none. For example, if the threshold is NT$200,000 and you make NT$250,000, they deduct the NT$200,000 first, and then calculate the remaining NT$50,000 at something like 0.005*. The probationary period is super long—you can only earn this lousy bonus after passing it.

(This was the situation in November 2018; I don't know whether it was changed later. Don't worry, it will definitely keep getting… hehe.)

2. There are an absurd number of miscellaneous tasks—way too many! They make simple things unnecessarily complicated, and you may even be called back after work to pick up or transport things.

3. The turnover rate is unbelievably high—on average, about one person leaves every two months. They tell you about lots of benefits, but you can see them without ever actually getting to enjoy them.

4. The veteran employees are all rather cold and act like old hands. Their attitude is basically, “You won't last long anyway; there are always more newcomers.” (After all, the turnover rate is so…)

5. Possibly to avoid paying severance, they may use every possible method to pressure you into quitting on your own.

6. The main point: the supervisor is freaking terrible.

The manager of one particular store is an extremely awful person with a strong desire for control. If you have annual leave or other entitlements, she may find all kinds of reasons to stop you from claiming them. What's frightening is that she also calls you every now and then to “check on you,” openly rolling her eyes and making snide remarks about employees, while privately joining the veteran employees in _ _ (use your imagination).

7. Friends considering working at Tian Yuan Hsiang, please think it through carefully. Don't waste your time.

Even if jobs are hard to find, don't step on a landmine.

8. Whether Tian Yuan Hsiang's products are good is a matter of personal opinion.

As for whether the supervisors and veteran employees there are good people?

All I can say is hehehehehe, teeheeheehee.

Pros

1. Amazing benefits—the year-end banquet and travel vouchers for the three major holidays are extremely generous.

2. The environment is beautiful; every visitor says it feels like a bed-and-breakfast.

Cons

1. It’s a family business. Whatever the boss and the boss’s wife say is treated as an imperial edict. Even when it goes against common sense or market trends, it’s still the same. If you don’t obediently follow orders or have your own ideas, you’re marked as a troublemaker.

2. Colleagues are generally indifferent, and everyone operates independently.

3. Office and various other software are pirated.

4. Employees are required to participate in company activities or training on holidays. Not attending will negatively affect your performance evaluation, and there is neither compensatory time off nor overtime pay. I don’t know whether this has changed since the implementation of the one fixed day off and one flexible rest day system.

5.

Pros

1. Good computer equipment

2. Flexible working hours, but clocking in and out is required

3. Generous year-end banquet gifts

Cons

1. New engineers earn 36,000 per month regardless of experience. Subsequent adjustments are minimal, and one-quarter of the salary is a bonus, which means receiving one-quarter less in labor pension contributions. This one-quarter is not paid until the middle of the month.

2. Performance calculation: 50% of an engineer’s performance evaluation is based on the company’s operating conditions, only 30% is based on the engineer’s job responsibilities, and 20% is based on other factors. The year-end bonus is up to 1.8 months’ salary and is calculated according to performance. Even when it is only 1.8 months’ salary, it is paid in two installments, with the other portion not payable until six months later. The bonuses for the Mid-Autumn Festival and Dragon Boat Festival are only a few thousand dollars.

3. There are absolutely no training courses.

4. The company has more than 120 employees, but currently only one engineer. This situation has lasted for 10 months. There is no engineer to discuss things with, so you have to Google solutions or look them up in books.

5. Employees take turns serving as the person on duty. You heard that right: engineers are asked to serve as duty staff, tidying up the dining area after everyone’s lunch, taking out the trash on Fridays, and cleaning the restroom.
